Abstract
Herbal remedies are complex mixtures of organic chemicals and have many adverse effects owing to their active ingredients or interactions with conventional drugs that can sometimes produce life threatening consequences. Although some professionals around the world offer education on the uses of herbal medicine, but the actual proportion of information to the public on herbal medicines remain low in Nigeria especially Ogun East Senatorial District.
This study assessed the perception of activities of some selected higher institution students in Ogun East Senatorial District of Nigeria to herbal medicine. It specifically examined the awareness, knowledge and the attitude of higher institution students towards herbal medicine.
This study is a descriptive cross-sectional. The population of the study includes students in the two Universities located in the selected area; Olabisi Onabanjo University and Tai Solarin University located in Ijebu-North Local Government Area and Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area. Random sampling techniques was employed to select two hundred (200) students from the two higher institution. Data was collected through a well structured questionnaire designed in line with the objectives of the study. The data were analysed using frequency count and simple percentage on Microsoft Excel.
Result from this study showed that herbal medicine is not new among students in Ogun East Senatorial District, it was revealed that 88.7% of the students were aware of herbal medicine and 97% of them have knowledge of herbal medicine from home. It was also observed that 80% of the students were influenced by their friends on the usage of herbal medicine. 67.5% of the students prefer herbal medicine for malaria treatment than conventional medicine because they thought herbal medicine is more reliable than conventional medicine. Hence from the study, it was established that students have positive attitude towards herbal medicine usage. Students should be enlighten on safety and evaluation of herbal medicine usage, this is because it has been reported in the literature that herbal medicine can be toxic if not well evaluated.
