Abstract

The study focused on this study is on linguistic analysis of abusive words in selected posts on social media. It specifically, investigate the lexical items in the interaction of the selected post. It further examine the use of abbreviation in their interaction, and investigate the use of tense in the abusive words in selected posts on social media. 

            This study adopted the analytical research design. In an attempt to achieve the aim of this study, random sampling techniques was used to select munch or copied abusive language on social media and analysed.

            The analysis revealed that different populations of users exhibit different propensities to use out-of vocabulary terms. Some of the abusive word investigated consisted of Rhetorical questions, metaphor and personification. Moreover, the following features found in the abusive words namely shortening, clippings and contractions, unconventional spellings, slang, word-letter replacement, word-digits replacement, word combination.

            It can be concluded that the internet is creating both development and distortion in language practice. There is urgent need to raise awareness of the linguistic variants between the language of electronic communication and the standard form.
