Abstract
This study was carried out on improving students’ reading proficiency through accelerated student’s reader using J.S.S.2 class as a case study. The study employed Quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design. Purposive sampling was used to select two schools out of the 24 public secondary school in Ijebu-North Local Government Area, 25 student were randomly selected in each of the two selected schools, and the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to analysed the data generated from the study. Findings from study indicated that there was no statistical verification that the use of AR had any influence on the reading comprehension scores of JSS II students when examined by group or by gender. It was concluded that a better use for those funds may be to hire extra hands for the classroom in order to allow the teacher more time with smaller groups of students, with a well-trained professional, that students will genuinely learn to love reading and experience the joy of success.
