Abstract

Radio stations owned by colleges or universities have been in existence since the earliest days of the medium, but little research has been conducted on university radio stations. Even less has focused on management of campus stations that are led primarily by students. The aim of this study was to investigate the challenges of managing a university radio station with focus on Olabisi Onabanjo University Radio station. It specifically provide a contemporary review of OOU Radio Stations, assess the programmes aired on OOU Radio Station, identify the management practices of OOU Radio Station, and analyse the challenges faced in managing OOU Radio station and provide recommendations.

The population for the study comprise of the entire eighteen (18) employees of OOU radio station. Descriptive statistics of frequency count and simple percentage was used to analysed the data generated from the questionnaire with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science Statistical (SPSS).

Findings from the study showed that Olabisi Onabanjo University radio programme focus on education, followed by news. Most of the information aired on the radio station are generated from television followed by internet. The radio station is owned by the university and the faculty advisor/manager is the one that determines the operating goals for the radio station. However, it was revealed the radio station operate even when students are on holiday. The broadcast equipment in the radio station were fairly rated but there are engineers on ground to deal with equipment challenges.
