Abstract
This study was designed to investigate community based patterns and processes of marital conflict and resolution in Lagos State. The study adopted descriptive research design using questionnaire and interview method to gather information from participants drawn from Alimosho Local Government area of Lagos State. Stratified and accidental sampling techniques were used to draw a total of one hundred and fifty-five (155) respondents that constitute the sample for the study. The findings of the study revealed that there was no significant relationship between gender and marital conflict resolution strategies of couples. It showed that there was significant relationship between age and marital conflict resolution strategies of couples while there was also significant relationship between duration of marriage and marital conflict resolution strategies of couples. It also revealed that there is no significant relationship between educational qualification and marital conflict resolution strategies of couples. The study showed that there is no significant relationship between occupational status and marital conflict resolution strategies of couples. It was concluded that the married couples’ effective communication, identification of differences and avoidance of each other during disagreement are the strategies employed in resolving their marital conflicts. Among other recommendations is that government should embark on marital campaigns, sensitizing both intending and married individuals on the need to adopt effective conflict resolution strategies in their marital relationships so as to help to reduce the rate of divorce.
