Abstract
The circulation of infectious diseases in the community settings in urban and rural areas remains to be a hectic problem. One of the sources of microbial diseases is bathroom. The current study aim to compare the quality and quantity of microbes of tiled and cemented bathroom of student’s hostel in Ijebu-north Local Government Area as a public health issues. Moistened swab stick were used to collect samples from bathrooms in forty (40) cemented bathroom and forty (40) tiled bathrooms using sterile cotton swab stick moistened with sterile normal saline. The microbial and biochemical analysis were also determined using standard methods. The average mean for coliform count in tiled bathroom is 8.4 x 103 and it ranged from 1.2 x 103 to 9.9 x 103. The highest count was found in BF17 (Bathroom Floor) with 9.9 x 103, followed by BF5 (Bathroom Floor) with 8.6 x 103 and the least count was found in BF4 (Bathroom floor) and BW2 (Bathroom wall) with 1.2 x 103 (Table 4.1). The average mean for coliform count in cemented bathroom is 13.0 x 103 and it ranged from 1.6 x 103 to 13.2 x 103. The highest count was found in BF2 (Bathroom Floor) with 13.2 x 103, followed by BF20 (Bathroom Floor) with 12.1 x 103 and the least count was found in BF8 (Bathroom floor) with 1.6 x 103 (Table 4.1). A total of one hundred and thirty six were isolated from the samples collected (seventy-two isolates from cemented bathroom and sixty four isolates from tiled bathroom). The isolated organisms includes Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Shigella dysentriae. It is recommended that both adult and young should adopt the habit of hand washing practice after using the bathrooms or toilets and routine surface disinfection of the bathroom surface, this can prevent cross contamination.
