Abstract
Actinomycetes are group of bacteria, which are present widely in ecological diversity. Actinomycetes are the major microbial population in soil which can produce active secondary metabolites. Aim of this study is to isolate and characterize varieties of actinomycetes from different agricultural soil. Soil samples were collected from different agricultural location (Vegetable soil, Maize soil, Cochorus soil, Banana soil, Cocoyam soil, Swampy soil, Stubborn grass soil and Forest soil) and used for actinomycetes isolation. The twenty-five actinomycetes classified into Streptomyces and Actinobacteria isolates were isolated from different soil samples based on their colony morphology. The isolates were analysed for their biochemical activity and found that all the isolates were positively active for catalase, motility and urease.
Further study into the utilization of the actinomycetes for agriculture industry needs to be done to fully utilize these potential microbes for sustainable agriculture.
Keyword: Agricultural soil, Actinomycetes, Streptomyces, Actinobacteria.
