Abstract

The airborne microbial concentrations of two laboratories located in the main campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) were investigated within a period of two weeks. The total aerobic plate counts and total coliform count were determined by the spread plate method on Nutrient and Potato Dextrose Agar respectively.

          The Total Coliform count obtained from the samples ranged from 2.0 x 106 to 2.8 x 106 cfu/ml for Chemistry laboratory and 1.0 x 104 to 3.2 x 104 cfu/ml for Microbiology laboratory. Also total aerobic count obtained from the samples ranged from 4.3 x 104 to 9.0 x 106 cfu/ml for Chemistry laboratory and 3.2 x 106 to 5.6 x 106 cfu/ml for Microbiology laboratory.

The microorganisms isolated were identified microscopically and by biochemical tests. The bacteria includes Bacillus spp., Straphylococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., Micrococcus leteus and Streptococcus spp. The fungal includes Epidermophyton spp., aspergillus niger and  Penicillium spp.

The study revealed that there is microbial load in both laboratories that were study. This comparative information could be useful for the school authority, laboratory instructors and public health practitioners on common airborne bacteria and fungi, and their roles in the indoor air quality of laboratories.
