Abstract

This study investigated the nutritional status as predictors of health of elderly in Ijebu-north Local Government Area, Ogun State. It specifically assessed the nutritional status of elderly in Ijebu-North Local Government Area, examined the health of elderly in Ijebu-North Local Government Area and examined if nutritional status will predict the health of elderly in Ijebu-North Local Government Area. The study was anchored on two theories: the wealth flow theory and transition theory.

The study employed descriptive survey design. The respondent are the 397 (Three hundred and Ninety-seven students) from (3) districts which are Ago-Iwoye, Oru-Ijebu and Ijebu-Igbo in Ijebu-North local government. Descriptive statistics was employed to analysed data generated from field and also the interpretation of the analysis.

Findings from the study revealed most of the elderly people in the study area were separated from their spouse and they family type is extended family. They also relied on the children for financial income and this is also evident from their response that family members are their caregiver. The finding also revealed showed that the elderly people are healthy. The study recommended that Government need to formulate health policy aimed at shifting the balance of care towards the community and it is essential that nutritional needs of older adults are explored and addressed. Failure to do this is likely to lead to a loss of independence with subsequent increased demands on social care provision and increased hospital admissions with the potential for more invasive and expensive healthcare requirements.
