Abstract

Privatization of education is a major problem of educational development in Nigeria today. In an attempt to catch up with other counterparts, many states in Nigeria, particularly the new ones, indulge in the opening and running of many educational institutions, even when they are least prepared to do so. This results in the lowering of standards and in various educational projects collapsing mid-way. This study investigated the privatization and sustainable development implication for Nigeria educational system. It highlighted the major challenge faced by Nigerian educational system and the developmental process of the nation.

          The study used public choice theory to explain privatization of state owned institution. The study adopted descripted survey research using questionnaire as the prime instrument. The sample size was drawn from Faculty of Education in Olabisi Onabanjo University. The data collected from the participant was simple percentage and Pearson Moment correlation Coefficient.

          Findings from the study revealed that there is significant relationship between learning environment and students’ performance. It was revealed that that there is significant relationship between government policies, administrative participation and academic staff commitment. It was revealed that there was significant relationship between functioning educational system and sustainable development.

          The study concluded that good educational system in any nation will aid proper development and progress. Among other recommendations is that the government should intervene with respect to giving some financial leverage to the educational sector. This could be through the Petroleum Trust Fund (P.T.F), Education Trust Fund (E.T.F) and others. However, this should however not warrant undue interference.
