Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the performance of snail fluid as medium for culturing yeast and bacteria with time or during storage. Snails were collected from different localities of Ago-Iwoye and kept in glass jar. Snails were picked up with blunt foreceps. They were dissected for sample collection, which was used further for isolation of bacteria. The total viable count of the bacteria isolates recovered from snail fluid ranges from 8 x 102 to 14 x 102. A total of thirty one (31) bacteria belonging to four genera were isolated in from snail fluid. The frequency occurrence of the bacteria isolates showed that Escherichia coli had the highest percentage occurrence (35%), followed by Clostridium spp. (23%), Salmonella spp. (165) and Staphylococcus spp. (16%). The antimicrobial susceptibility test revealed that none the bacteria isolates were susceptible to Cefuroxime, Augmentin and Ampicillin. Only Staphylococcus aureus was susceptible to Celtazid, Clostridium spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were susceptible to Nitrofuraton. All the bacteria isolates were susceptible to Gentamycin, Ciprofloxacin and Ofloxacin. It is therefore expedient that farmers provide and maintain hygienic environment in snail farming to help prevent proliferation of these infectious agents.
