Abstract

Many students are faced with uncertainty and stress as they make career choices due to ignorance, inexperience, peer pressure, advice from friends, parents and teachers or as a result of the prestige attached to certain jobs without adequate vocational guidance and career counselling. Among many factors that have been discussed as predictors of career choice, several works have been done on socio-demographic, parental, peer influence, environmental factors. This study examines the predictors of career choice among senior secondary school students in Ikenne Local Government Area in Ogun State.

The research adopted a descriptive research design. The total population for the study comprised of all senior secondary school students in Ikenne Local Government Area. Random sampling technique was adopted to select two hundred students from five secondary schools that participated in the study through the administration of questionnaire.

Findings of the study revealed that personality, role model and social factor did not significantly predict the career choice of senior secondary school students; it showed that interests and self-concept significantly predict the career choice of senior secondary school students.

Among other recommendation of the study is that schools should provide guidance to learners during their high school studies in order to guide learners in making their career choices and aspirations before entering university.
