Abstract

The aim of this study was to isolate bacteria from root of neem tree and determine their antibacterial activity. Neem root samples were collected from different location in Ago iwoye. One (1) g of the root sample was soaked in 10ml peptone water to dislodge the bacterial and also encourage growth and serial dilution was carried out after which where dilution factor 10-2 and 10-4 were used to culture the bacterial using pour plate method. The total bacteria count from neem root samples ranged from 1.0 x 102 to 6.8 x 102. A total number of twenty one (21) isolates were identified from all the root samples. The identified bacteria were Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Bacillus and Streptomyces. The antibiotic producing bacteria that were tested against pathogenic organisms were Bacillus spp. and Streptomyces. The isolated bacteria were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus fecalis, Pseudomonas aeurugenosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella typhi. Results from this study revealed the presence of antibacterial producing bacteria isolated neem roots. It was revealed that Bacillus spp. and Streptomyces spp. isolated from root of neem tree inhibited some of the test organisms which included Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus feacalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella typhi. The results indicated that bacteria isolated from neem tree root had beneficial effect in controlling the pathogenic microbial organisms and thus can be used in therapeutic formulations in near future.
