Abstract
The study aimed at comparing private and public secondary school students’ performance in WEAC Chemistry in Ijebu-North Local Government Area, Ogun State. It specifically examine the trend in private and public school student performance in WAEC Chemistry between 2015 and 2018. It also investigated the difference in the private and public secondary school students’ performance in Chemistry.
The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population for this study comprised of both private and public senior secondary school in Ijebu-North. Random sampling techniques was used to select at least 10 senior secondary schools which comprised of 5 public senior secondary schools and 5 private senior secondary schools. The data used for the study was the WAEC result for the period of 2015 -2018 (4 years). In analyzing the data, straight line graph was used to analyse the trends in performance of Chemistry while Paired Sample Statistics will be used to test the difference between private and secondary school students performance in Chemistry.
Results showed that there was improvement in Chemistry WAEC results of private schools in year 2016. It was also revealed that there was improvement in the Chemistry WAEC results of public schools in year 2016 and 2017. Finally, it was shown that there was significant difference in the performance of private and secondary school in Chemistry from 2014-2018. The implication of this is that there was improvement in the performance of Chemistry WAEC result of public secondary school than private secondary school between year 2015-2018.
It was concluded that public secondary schools students in Ijebu-North, Ogun State perform better in Chemistry than their counterparts in the private schools. Among other recommendations is that more supervision should be done on the private secondary schools to make teachers work better on the students in Chemistry.
