Abstract

Presently in Nigeria there are many programmes designed to educate the public about the need to live a healthy life, stem down the spread of STI and HIV/AIDS, yet the diseases is still rampant among people. This necessitates a study on the efficacy of theatre and it’s usage in social orientation about HIV/AIDs.

            The study was anchored on social cognitive theory and self-efficacy. A pretest-post-test research design which involve the use of drama package to create awareness about HIV/AIDs was adopted for this study. A sample size of 40 students of Olabisi Onabanjo University were selected for the study. Questionnaire was used to gather information directly from the respondents and the data generated were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).

            Findings from the study revealed that there was no significant difference in the perception of the male and female pre-test group on the usage of theatre in social orientation on the usage of HIV/AIDs in Nigeria; it showed that female participant perceive usage of theatre in social orientation better than the male participant. However, the post-test group perceive the usage of theatre in social orientation of HIV/AIDs better than the pre-test group.

            It was concluded that theatre orientate people on the myth, fact, sign, symptom and prevention of HIV/AIDs. Hence, there is need to encourage the use of theatre for teaching and promoting health in schools and communities.
