Abstract
This study assessed the factors affectry students' performance in Senior Secondary School Biology in Ogun State. It specifically determined students' interest, study habit and attitude in the study area. This study was anchored on Piaget's and Cognitive Load theory.
Descriptive survey research design was adopted by this study and the target population was SSS3 Students in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State. The instruments used is a questionnaire that has five sections and section E was Biology Achievement Test (BAT). Data were generated through questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
The finding of this study revealed that study habit as a variable does not affect students' academic performance in biology. Students' interest and attitude significantly influence students' academic performance in biology. There is significant difference between male and female students' academic performance in biology in favor of females. Also, there is significant positive relationship between students interest and attitude, attitude and study habit, academic performance in biology and also that students interest has no relationship with study habit and academic performance in biology. It was concluded that the performance of students in Biology in our secondary schools can be improved if students are involved in practical lessons under the guidance of well trained and qualified personnel.
Based on the findings the following recommendations were made: School should establish the office of guidance and counseling to advise the students in order for them to change their attitude towards science subject. Interest based activities should be incorporated into the biology scheme to trigger learning of biology, effort should also be made by parents, teachers and governments to maintain and increase the positive attitude of students towards science in secondary school, parents and teachers should encourage children to study at home and in schools and also schools should develop counseling programs.
