Abstract
This research work examines the influence of parenting styles and peer pressure on adolescents drug use in Ago-iwoye. The study highlighted the effect of parental styles on adolescents drug use, peer pressure on adolescents drug use and the effect of parental styles and peer pressure on adolescents drug use in Ago iwoye.
The Socio-logical theory, Attachment theory and Problem behavior theory. The study employed descriptive survey design. The respondent are the 150 (One hundred and fifty students) from (5) five secondary schools out of the twenty-three secondary schools in Ijebu-North local government. Data were collected on respondents socio-demographic attribute, parenting style scale, peer pressure scale and drug substance scale. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, linear and multiple regression, at P<0.05 while qualitative data of scale were content-analyzed.
The socio-demographic variables of the respondents depicted male 91%, 50& female, age is 19% within 12yrs-14yrs, 122% within 122% within 15yrs-18yrs, ethnic group is 95% (Yoruba), 14% (Hausa), Igbo (32),religion is 85% (Christianity),42% (Muslim),14% (others) and class is indicated 19% (JSS1-JSS3), 122% (SSS1-SSS3).The grand mean for the parental style scale is 38.6%, grand mean for peer pressure scale 21.21% and the grand mean for the Adolescents drug use is 13.69. The multiple regression which depict a significant relationship between parenting styles scale, peer pressure scale on adolescents drug use P<0.05 at 0.00, R. square 0.98, while adjusted R. squared 0.96.
The findings of the study revealed that there is no significant effect of the parenting styles on adolescents drug use, also no significant effect of peer pressure on adolescents drug use but there are combine significant effect of parenting styles and peer pressure on adolescents drug use in Ago-iwoye.
It recommended that parents should be helpful to their children and they should talk to them as friends not as authoritative parents because adolescents are convinced more when they are with an open-minded person who shows both understandability and kindness.
