Abstract

This study was carried out to examine language attitude and its effects on selected secondary school students in Ijebu-north local government. Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study using a sample size of two hundred (200) students drawn from four (4) selected secondary schools in Ijebu-north local government area of Ogun state. Data obtained from administered questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that that students have a positive attitude towards studying English language and also use English as means of communication with other. Results showed that there was no significant difference in male and female students’ language attitude. Conclusively, the language attitude of students have significant impact on their academic performance in English and other subjects. Among other recommendations is that teachers should create more encouraging atmosphere in the English classes to continue to promote the students’ positive attitudes towards English.
