Abstract

The role of religion is ambivalent and the practice is considered indispensable in the social space inhabited by man; it has dominated the invisible and impalpable vortex of issues; it is a tool for shaping political, social and moral life of individuals. Therefore, this study aim at investigating the role of selected Asalatu prayer groups in the social and moral life of Muslims in Ago-Iwoye.

The study adopts descriptive research design.  The instrument used was questionnaire which was meant to obtain information from the respondents within Ago-Iwoye in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State in order to elicit their view on the practice. After the introduction in chapter one, chapter two discussed the meaning of religion, social and moral aspect of religion.

This study has shown that social and moral development in any society is not possible without the full integration of the religious dimension which Asalatu Muslim group cannot be left out. Even in the primitive society after food gathering the most persistent social inclination was the religious nature of man. Admittedly, even in modern society, after the satisfaction of man’s basic need; food, water, and shelter, the religious drive which is almost instinctual dominates the human person from cradle to old age. Social and Moral progress cannot be achieved in isolation of religious elements. The human society can only achieve cultural progress when all the component institutions are integrated for holistic development. It was concluded in this study that the participation level of Asalatu among Ago-iwoye Muslims is average. Also there is positive impact of Asalatu prayer groups in moral and social life of Ago-iwoye Muslims. Among other recommendation is that government should support Muslims in providing funds and relieve materials to Asalaut prayer groups in order to be able to cater for the less previledge one among them. This will encourage them to continue participate in Asalatu prayer group
