Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyse the impact of Social Media on the Academic Performance of students in Olabisi Onabanjo University. Specifically, the study seeks to; analyse the frequency of social media usage among students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, to ascertain how the use of social media has impacted the academic performance of the students in Olabisi Onabanjo University, and to ascertain how gender has influence on students’ usage of social media network. Descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study using a well structure questionnaire. A sample size of one hundred and fifty students were selected for the study. Findings from the study showed that the undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University have access to social media and that the frequency to which the students have use social media is high. Results showed that the facebook is the social media network that is most used by the undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University. It was revealed that students’ frequent use of social media have significant impact on their academic performance. However, social media do no significantly have impact on the academic performance of the students in Olabisi Onabanjo University. Finally, there is no significant difference between male and female students usage of social media network. The findings of this study and earlier ones showed some noteworthy results. The results of this study suggest that lecturers should come up with a template on how their students can maximize the benefits of Social media, that school management should incorporate rules and regulations on the use of the social media in the school and, that the government should put in place adequate control measures to regulate their use among students and lecturers.
