Abstract

            This research critically analyse the occurrences and effects of flooding of river in Majidun, Ikorodu, Lagos State. The study identify the factors responsible for flooding in the study area, it examine the effect of flooding on the physical, social and economic status of the study area, it also assess the environmental impact of flooding in the study area and proffer possible policy solutions to the flooding of Majidun River.

            The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. One hundred questionnaires were purposively administered to participant in the study, out of which ninety-three were properly filled and subjected to statistical analysis. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).

Findings from the study showed that the annual frequency of flooding in the area is between 15-20 times in a year, the major cause of flooding in the area is excessive rainfall, rain intensity significantly affects flooding in the area. It was revealed that there was no damage to school infrastructure due to flood, there was also no disruption in school attendance due to flood. The major control measures embarked upon for flood protection is monthly environmental sanitation and Federal government is most responsible for prevention of flood.

It was recommended that people should be enlightened on the importance of pedestrian bridges to their safety and also pedestrians that cultivate the habit of not using pedestrian bridges when crossing should be sanction.
