Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of participatory method on teaching of Economics in Secondary Schools with focus on Ijebu-north Local Government Area. The study adopted quasi-experimental pre-test/posttest research design. A sample of 100 Economics students were grouped into two (Control group and Experimental group) and they were taught Economics using lecture method and participatory method. Economic Achievement Test (EAT) was used to observe the academic achievement of the control and experimental group. After treatment of results were collected and analysed by inferential statistics of mean, standard deviation and one-way ANCOVA. The results of the study revealed that participatory method was effective in teaching Economics in Senior Secondary School. Findings showed that there was no difference in the performance of male and female students exposed to participatory method. It is therefore recommended that Economic teachers should adopt participatory approach in involving students at the course of teaching in the classroom.
