Abstract
This study examined effect of social media on youth and academic performance in Ago-Iwoye Metropolis. It specifically determined the influence of the exposure of social media on your academic performance, identified the social media youth frequently use in gathering information, assessed the hour(s) spent on social media sites among youths in Ago-Iwoye Metropolis and identified the kind of information youth seek on social media sites in Ago-Iwoye. The study was anchored on three theories: uses and gratification theory, social information processing theory and media equation theory. This study adopt descriptive survey research design.
Taro Yamme formula was used to selected a total sample of size of 400 respondents out of the total population of 94,705 the study area. Descriptive statistics was employed to analysed data generated from field and also the interpretation of the analysis. Findings from the study revealed social media has a positive significant effect on academic performance and social media have impact on academic performance of students. The finding also revealed that most of the youth use social media for academic purpose and it has improve their academic grade. The study recommended that youths should be educated on the influence of Social media on their academic performance and lecturers should ensure they use the social media as a tool to improve the academic performance of students in schools.
