Abstract

The true prevalence of Sexually Transmitted diseases (STIs) in Nigeria may not be known due to the secrecy of sex and incomplete disease reporting/notification, the country is expected to follow global trends. Knowing the knowledge and practice of sexual risk behaviour will aid in recommending solution to increase sexual transmitted diseases. Therefore this study investigated the knowledge and practice of sexual risk behaviours between undergraduate students of two universities in Ogun state. A cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. The population for the study was drawn from Olabisi Onabanjo University and Tai Solarin University of Education. The sample constitutes five hundred (500) undergraduate drawn from the two selected universities. Questionnaire was used to gather information from the participant. The data generated was analysed using descriptive and regression analysis. Findings from the study revealed that there was significant relationship between the undergraduate students’ knowledge of sexual risk behaviour and practice of sexual risk behaviour; there was no significant difference in the knowledge and practice of sexual risk behaviour among undergraduate students of the two universities. Also, there was no significance difference in the knowledge and practice of sexual risk behaviour among male and female undergraduate students. Among other recommendations is that Health Education should be regarded as compulsory subject for secondary school students because it will equipped the students and widen their understanding on the risk associated with high sexual risk behaviour so that when they get to higher institution, they won’t take advantage of their freedom to engage in sexual risk behaviour.
