Abstract
It is understood that the role of newspapers as four estate of any country are to inform, educate and enlighten the public but little is known about newspaper awareness and enlightenment to the public about the outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria. This study therefore investigated newspapers coverage of the treatment of Lassa fever in Nigerian between the periods of January and April, 2016. This study adopted content analysis research design. The population for the study was drawn from four newspapers which comprised The Punch, The Tribune, The Vanguard and The Nation. Taro Yamane’s sampling techniques was adopted to determine the sample size and sample random simple was adopted for final sampled editions. Data generated were presented in tables, pie charts while simple percentage was adopted to analyse the data. Findings from the study revealed that majority of the newspapers direction to Lassa fever was neutral. Newspapers did not give prominence to Lassa fever because the stories were not given front page prominence which is the first page any reader sees and spaces allotted to health news was majorly inside. It was also shown that print media offer solution to Lassa fever crisis in their coverage but other stories publish as interview and straight new were far above recommendations/adverts and comments. The frequency of Lassa fever reportage was however extremely low. It was however recommended that health issues information should be given prominence attention by putting it in front page of newspaper in order to create attention and attraction to readers.
