Abstract

Death as the end of life has always been a central concern for human. Many issues related to death include preparation, how family feels and how it took place. These indeed are global issues that needs to be addressed. Therefore this study investigated perception of people on death and dying in Ijebu-North Local Government area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The study further investigated the ways in which loved ones prepare for the death of a family in Ijebu-North Local Government Area. It examined the major causes of death in Ijebu-North Local Government Area and also examine ways and preparation for the death of a loved one in Ijebu North Local Government Area.

          The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population for the study comprised of elderly men and women above 50 years of age. Stratified random sampling techniques was adopted in selecting 10% of the total population which comprised of two hundred and eighty four (284).  Primary data (questionnaire) was used to solicit information from the participant of the study.

          Findings of the study revealed that that people of Ijebu-north do not like hearing of news or rumour about the death of their loved ones and death of young ones is not consider natural, including when accident or sickness occur. It also showed that spending time with family, children and grandchildren is a better way to prepare of death. It was revealed that poverty and sickness is one of the major cause of death in Ijebu-north local government area while people above 50 years are encourage to prepare their will because death can come anytime.

          It was concluded that dying in Ijebu-north local government area is caused by poverty and sickness. Also, old people like being with their loved ones before dying. They also preferred to go back to village when they perceived death coming. Among other recommendation of the study is that the people of Ijebu-north should endeavour to take care of their health in order to reduce the rate of dying due to illness and poverty.
