Abstract

Sexuality education is described as education about human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, reproductive health, emotional relations, reproductive rights and responsibilities, abstinence, contraception, family planning, body image, sexual orientation, sexual pleasure, values, decision making, communication, dating, relationships, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and how to avoid them, and birth control methods. This study was conducted to explore perception of teachers on the need for the introduction of sexuality education in the secondary schools in Ijebu-north Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using questionnaire as the prime instrument for data collection. Simple random sampling techniques was used to sample two hundred (200) secondary school teachers in Ijebu-north Local Government Area of Ogun State. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics such as simple percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient. Findings of the study revealed that teachers did not significantly perceive the need for introduction of sexuality education in secondary school curriculum; there was no significant relationship between teachers’ knowledge of sex education and the perceived need for the introduction of sexuality education in secondary school curriculum; there was no significant relationship between teachers attitude to sexuality education and the perceive need for the introduction of sexuality education in Ogun state secondary school curriculum. It was concluded that teachers believe that the introduction of sex education in schools will make students to experiment sex before marriage. Among other recommendations is that there is need to educate teachers about the concepts and area that seem not to gain approval especially in topics related to sexual issues.
