Abstract
This study examined the influence of Sociability and Socio-economics status as predictors of Self-disclosure among undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU). It attempted to examine the influence of socio-economic status on self-disclosure and the influence of gender on self-disclosure. The study was anchored on Social Penetration theory, Social identification/ Deindividuation Theory and Communication Privacy Management Theory. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Random Sampling techniques was employed to select the participant that participate in the study, the sample size consisted of one hundred and fifty (150) students of Olabisi Onabanjo University. The research instrument used in the study were Journard Sixty-item Self Disclosure, Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale and Perceived Social Class Scale. Data generated were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and analysis of variance. Findings from the study revealed that there was no statistically significant main influence of socio economic status on self-disclosure among undergraduate students of OOU (F(2,149), = .473, P>0.5). It showed that there was no statistically significant influence of gender on self-disclosure among undergraduate of OOU (F(2,149), = 1.077 P> .05). A closer look further revealed that there was no statistically significant influence of sociability on self-disclosure among undergraduate students of OOU (F(2,149),, = 1.468, P> 0.5). The study succeeded in establishing that sociability, socio economic status, age, gender and level will not significantly, independently and jointly influence self-disclosure among undergraduate students of OOU (F(5,149)=.223; P>.05). Also, the factors of sociability, socio economic status, age, gender and level account for 50% variance in the dependent variable of self-disclosure (R2 = .050). Among other recommendations is that students should endeavors to be careful in whatever they want to disclose either to friends, family or information showing at the level of interpersonal relationship.
