Abstract

The main objective of this study was to examine the influence of gender identity on academic self efficiency of primary 5 pupils. It specifically examined the level of general academic self-efficacy possessed by primary 5 pupils; examined the different level of general academic self-efficacy between male and female primary 5 pupils; examined the influence of gender identity on academic self-efficacy of primary 5 pupil and investigated the correlations between level of general self-efficacy and gender of primary 5 pupil.

Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of the entire primary 5 pupils in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State. Simple random sampling techniques was adopted to twenty (20) primary 5 pupils from each of the ten primary schools. The instruments used were Children’s Self Efficacy Scale and Gender Identity/Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults. Data generated from the participant were analysed using descriptive statistics such simple percentage for analysis of the demographic information and Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient to test the correlation between the variables; multiple regression to test the influence of gender identity on academic self efficacy and T-Test to analyse the difference in male and female general academic self efficacy level.

Findings from the study showed that there was significant influence of gender identity on academic self-efficacy of primary 5 pupils (R=0.585; R2= 0.301; F=68.628 which is significant at 0.05, P<0.05) and there was significant difference in the level of general academic self-efficacy between male and female primary 5 pupil. it can be concluded that the primary 5 pupils selected for this study had a low general academic-self efficacy and there was  correlation between the level of general self-efficacy and gender of primary 5 pupils.

Among other recommendations is since the general academic self-efficacy of the pupils is low, teachers and parents should endeavour to encourage their children to improve on their academic and instill academic discipline in them. This will go a long way in increasing their academic self-efficacy.
