Abstract
The effects of training and development on employees productivity, particularly in the public sector in Nigeria have continued to be debated. This study examined the various staff training programmes in The Polytechnic, Ibadan with the view to ascertaining the existing training programmes for staff and how they have impacted on staff productivity. It also examined issues and challenges associated with training and development programmes in The Polytechnic Ibadan.
The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample of 199 teaching and non-teaching staff of the Polytechnic was used for the study. A set of the questionnaire was administered as the prime instrument for gathering data for the study. The data were analysed using simple statistical instruments. Results showed that there is a well-designed staff training programme in the institution. The institution organises in-service training, public vocational school training, apprenticeship training, on-the-job training, seminar and refresher courses for its employees. Furthermore, the study showed that training allows the employee to acquire skills and requisite knowledge. It was indicated that the training and development programme enables the employee to strive for higher quality, increase in willingness to take a new responsibility. However, the study identified lack of motivation for training and development programme, and failure of the management to recognise the improvement of staff trained as some of the issues and challenges associated with the training and development programmes in the Polytechnic Ibadan.
It was concluded that training and development programmes have been impacting positively on the employees of the Polytechnic Ibadan. It recommended to make staff training more attractive and rewarding to staff; there is a need to conduct a training needs assessment to ensure that the right training is given.
