Abstract

Libraries without sufficient numbers and types of computers; numbers and types of books; and without well-designed spaces may not be able to adequately support student learning, critical thinking, or enjoyment of reading. Unfortunately, in far too many schools, school libraries have not been updated and cannot foster the kind of learning we are hoping to see in students today. This study specifically survey teachers’ opinion on how to improve the school library in terms of material acquisition and maximum usage. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study.  One hundred and twenty (120) respondents comprising of teachers and librarians of secondary school in Ijebu-north local government area were used for this study. The data generated in the study through questionnaire were analysed with descriptive statistics. Findings of the study revealed that teachers perceived the school library adequate, the teachers believed that reference materials are inadequate in school library, the adequacy of newspapers and magazines were negative, majority of the teachers opined that there are computers in the school library. It showed that government is one of the major source of materials in the school library. Also, NGOs and parents, teachers association provide library materials for school while community did not have any major contribution to the school library. The study showed that the school library is often times used by prefect and students preparing for external examination. Also, it was shown that only students who pay for library subscription are permitted to use the school library often times. However, this study concluded that the condition of school library is adequate and the major source of school library materials are from Parents and Teachers Association. Among other recommendations is that the school library should be provided with adequate funds to implement its programmes by government and non-government agencies, school administrators should encourage the community for participation in school library development.
