Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the influence of the English Language on Yoruba Home Videos. It further investigate the use of code-switching and code mixing in Yoruba home videos; investigate the areas in which English has influenced Yoruba home videos; and also determine the part of speech that features more often in Yoruba home videos.
This study adopt a quantitative research method. Thirty video films were selected using random sampling techniques. It was ensured that video films depicts the multilingual situation in Nigeria as evidenced by the different linguistic backgrounds of the category of people in the films. The theoretical approach used was sociolinguistic in orientation.
Findings showed that there is high level of code-switching and code mixing in Yoruba home videos. It was also discovered that English has influenced the title of Yoruba home videos. However, uncontrolled code-mixing and code switching can slowly kill any language. From personal observation, it is very obvious that for reasons well known, Nigerians cannot do without code-mixing and code switching due to numerous indigenous language and English as our official language.
It was concluded that there is significant influence of the English Language on Yoruba Home Videos. Hence, if no appropriate response is given, it portends a great danger to the sustenance and growth of indigenous languages. It is recommended that code-mixing and code switching should be consciously controlled and minimized in Nigeria home videos
