Abstract

 The main objective of this study was to established the need for guidance and counselling services among the undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye It specifically examine the students’ awareness of guidance and counselling services; identified the guidance and counselling needs of university students and also assessed the perception of university students on the quality and effectiveness of the guidance and counselling service. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of all the students in the Faculty of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University. Simple random sampling techniques was adopted to select two hundred (200) students in Faculty of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University. The instruments used were Awareness of Guidance and Counselling Scale, Needs for Guidance and Counselling Scale and Perception of Students on the Quality and Effectiveness of Guidance and Counselling Scale.  Data generated from the participant were analysed using descriptive statistics such as simple percentage and regression analysis. 

Findings from the study showed that there was no significant difference in the awareness of guidance and counselling service among undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University and also there was significant difference in the need for guidance and counselling service among undergraduate students of Olabisi Onabanjo University and 

Hence, it can be concluded that students were highly aware of guidance and counselling service. Among other recommendations is that the quality and effectiveness of guidance and counselling services should be evaluated for tertiary institutions in order to help the counsellor’s bridge the gap between students’ perceived need for their services and counselling services provided.
