Abstract

This study investigated socio-political status as correlate of academic achievement of Junior Secondary School Students in Ago-Iwoye. The specific objective of the study was to determine the effect of socio-political status on the parents’ on students’ academic achievement; to examine the impact of parent educational qualification on students’ academic achievement and also to survey the effect of parents occupation on the academic achievement of secondary school students. Three hypotheses were raised and tested in the study.

          The research adopted a descriptive research design. The total population for the study comprised of all junior secondary school students in Ago-iwoye. Random sampling technique was adopted to select two hundred junior secondary school students that participated in the study through the administration of questionnaire.

          The findings of the study there is significant effect of socio-political status on the academic achievement of junior secondary school students in Ago-iwoye; parents’ academic background has significant effect on junior secondary school students’ academic achievement and parents’ qualification has significant effect on academic achievement of junior secondary school students’ academic achievement.

          Among other recommendation of the study is that parents’ without education and those with low educational qualifications should endeavour to send their children to home lessons after school hours, by weekends and during holidays to improve their academic performance.
