Abstract
The media has always been involved in the politics of Nigeria and often at a great cost. It has always defended the people, championed their aspirations as well as projected the ideology the party in power. But it can also be manipulated to serve on the interests of those in power which could be counter-productive. This contribution of the media to the maintenance of peace in the country has not been given due academic attention. But since television could be seen as a major and popular channel of mass communication, the study therefore attempt to investigate the influence of political and electoral education adverts in preventing political violence in Nigeria.
This study is anchored on Normative, Marxist and Terror Management Theories which seek to locate media structure and performance within the social milieu in which it operates. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population used to analysis comprised of 80 subjects drawn from students, traders and transport workers in Ago-Iwoye area of the Ijebu-North local government, Ogun State.
The study showed that majority of the respondents watched political adverts on television and concluded that political and electoral education adverts prevent political violence in Nigeria during the 2015 general election
In view of the foregoing, the project therefore recommend that further study should be carried out by student on the contribution of other media (radio, films, newspaper, or webcasting) to the maintenance of peace before, during and after national election.
